Commercial Fire Detection Alarm & Fire Suppression Systems

Commercial Fire Detection Alarm & Fire Suppression SystemsRisk Assessment

If you employ more than 5 people you should be aware of the Fire precautions regulations and the Regulatory reform (Fire Safety) order. These rules require that every organisation with five or more people should carry out an assessment of the fire risks in the same way you undertake health and safety assessments in order to maintain a safe working environment.

These requirements include but are not limited to:

Carrying out a fire risk assessment

The provision of fire fighting and fire detection equipment

 An effective fire action plan

 Adequate means of escape

Staff training and fire safety awareness

 Appointing a responsible person

It is an offence not to have a fire risk assessment; you may also find that your insurance company will not cover you if you have not carried out this assessment even if you hold a fire certificate.

Justice Fire & Security can help you with this assessment, by providing you with recommendations and quotations for automatic and manual fire alarm systems, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting and signage, training and advice on exit routes and action plans.

Fire Alarm Systems

In its simplest form a fire alarm system will consist of manual break glass call points adjacent to the exits (known as a type M system), adequate sounders throughout the protected area and a control panel near to the exit.

Automatic systems (known as L or P type) will consist of smoke and heat detectors and will be installed in vulnerable areas and may have ancillary equipment such as door releases etc these systems will be of a ‘conventional type’ whereby detectors are grouped together in areas known as zones typically 1-8 zones. These systems are designed for small to medium size premises.

Analogue addressable systems are designed for larger and more complex applications and each individual detector and call point on the system will be identified by software control. These systems will have printers, network compatibility for pc based control and able to integrate into a building management system so that for example if their was a fire it would be able to release fire door closers, activate roof vents and fans, shut down lifts activate voice evacuation and PA systems, shut down gas supplies etc.

All the above systems can be monitored at our Alarm receiving centre who will action the appropriate authorities.

We will provide as part of our survey and assessment a quotation to install your fire alarm system to British Standards 5839 along with a maintenance program suitable for the environment that it is installed.

Our Designers and technicians have a vast knowledge of systems and are constantly kept up to date with regular product and legislation training. As an NSI Gold and BAFE accreditted company you can be sure of a quality service right from the start.

Fire Extinguishers

The use of fire extinguishers should form part of your Fire risk assessment and is a legal requirment. We can help with this assessment and provide quotations to supply and install adequate equipment in your premises. Thereafter our FETA trained engineers will service the equipment in accordance with BS 5306 and provide ongoing advice and training of which extinguisher to use on what type of fire.

WATER FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are especially designed for tackling Class A fires (wood, paper, straw, textiles, coal etc.).

FOAM FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are ideally suited where both Class A & B fire risks exist. Aqueous Film Forming Foam or AFFF is particularly suited to fight liquid spill fires such as petrol, oil, fats, paints etc. and works by forming a film on the liquid to extinguish the fire.

CARBON DIOXIDE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are suitable for Class B risks involving flammable liquids and especially for electrical hazards. These extinguishers have been a natural replacement for Halon. CO2 is harmless to electrical equipment and as such is ideal for modern offices, electronic risks, and fires caused by the combustion of liquids such as: oils, fats, solvents, etc.

POWDER FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are especially suited to mixed fire risk environments and a good all round extinguisher. They are also suitable for flammable liquid risk, such as methane, propane, hydrogen, natural gas etc.

WET CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are especially designed for tackling cooking oil / deep fat fryer (Class F) fires, but also have an effective capability for extinguishing Class A fires (wood, paper, straw, textiles, coal etc.). This extinguisher has also passed the electrical conductivity test at 35kv.

Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus (VESDA)

The VESDA air sampling fire detection system was originally designed for high risk critical areas such as Computer & telecommunications rooms.

It works by continually drawing air from the protected area through sampling pipes with the aid of a high efficiency aspirator. Once inside the unit air is sampled by a laser detector that scatters a beam of light and measuring any smoke before passing the air back into the protected area these units can pick up a processor chip overheating in a computer before a fire even starts to develop hence the name VESDA. Systems are used in conjunction with our fire alarms and if required can activate a fire suppression system to extinguish a fire automatically.

Today’s VESDA systems are used in many applications and their sensitivity can be adjusted to a normal detection level, we have installed these units in warehouse’s, production areas,Heritage buildings and Shopping centres in fact whenever there is a maintenance or access issue that standard smoke detectors cannot be installed we will install a VESDA system.

Gaseous Fire Suppression systems

Suppresion systems are extensively used in conjunction with our fire alarm and VESDA systems for the protection of electronic assets such as computer server rooms, vital communications hardware, data storage or archives. On detection of fire the gas is discharged throughout the protected space, extinguishing the fire with minimal collateral damage within the protected space.

Their are various types of suppresion system available depending on the application for example server and electrical rooms, industrial kitchens , paper mills and warehousing.

FM 200 is ideal for protecting water sensitive equipment and goods from the threat of fire. Data stored in server room computers is critical to a business and can be severely damaged by the water from sprinkler systems. The main advantage of FM200 is the amount of agent required to suppress a fire. This means fewer cylinders, therefore less wasted space for storage of FM200 cylinders. Could your business survive with the computer destroyed and your data lost?
